Janet's Story

Creativity has no age limit

When Janet first joined Immediate Theatre, she wasn’t looking to stand in the spotlight. She was looking for connection. Introduced to the group through a local over-50s programme at a small theatre, she was drawn to the idea of performing in community spaces, places like lunch clubs, where theatre could reach people who might otherwise never experience it.

It felt like a much better reason to do theatre

she recalls.

You could entertain people who might not get that chance

Over time, storytelling became central to Janet’s journey. Through projects like ‘Voices of Change’, she interviewed residents who had moved to Hackney over the past three decades. Those conversations didn’t just become part of a creative project, they sparked friendships and deepened her understanding of the neighbourhood she calls home.

You realise the majority of people you meet are really interesting and wonderful

Janet has always believed creativity doesn’t have an age limit. Now at 80, she continues to perform, write, sing and dance with Immediate Theatre. From puppet theatre and community performances to the Hackney Social Radio during the pandemic, every project has offered a new opportunity to learn and grow.

These weekly radio sessions during lockdown were especially meaningful. At a time when many people felt isolated, Janet and her fellow participants continued creating together, sharing music, stories and conversation.

It kind of kept me alive during the pandemic

Janet Evans

she remembers.

For Janet, each project offers a focus, a reason to keep exploring and contributing. It’s proof that creativity can continue shaping our lives at every stage.

Immediate Theatre has also played a deeply personal role in Janet’s life. After the loss of her partner in 2017, the group became an anchor, a place where she could laugh, collaborate and feel part of something bigger.

It keeps you alive

Janet Evans

she says simply.

You feel you’re still contributing to the world

Janet Evans

For Janet, that sense of belonging is what healthy communities are built on: creativity, friendship and shared purpose. By coming together to tell stories, Immediate Theatre helps ensure that no one, whatever their age, is left on the sidelines.
